About The Doctor

Dr. Mark Allen Chung, a native of Honolulu, began his college education at the University of Hawaii as a biology major. After two years, he transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle. During this same year, he was granted a scholarship from the state of Hawaii for the WICHE (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education) Program in Optometry, which enabled him preferential admission to several Optometry colleges, one year early. Due to its location and emphasis on clinical studies, Mark selected the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) in Fullerton for his next four years of optometric study. Besides an internship on the SCCO campus, Mark also participated in rotations at the Optometric Center of Los Angeles in downtown L.A., the Veterans' Administration in Brentwood, CA, the Low Vision Clinic in Las Vegas, and Tripler Hospital in Honolulu.

Dr. Chung's professional career began in June 1982, the same month he graduated from SCCO, cum laude. Sent by his optometry school counselor a few days before graduation, he set out for his very first job interview, and was hired as the "contact lens specialist" for the ophthalmology group of Aronberg, Sharp and Fein in Beverly Hills. When the ophthalmology group disbanded two years later, he set out to acquire more patient and practice management skills by working as an independent contractor in several different office settings for the next eighteen months. Finally ready to create his own interpretation of how a practice should run, Dr. Chung opened the doors of the West Hollywood Optometric Center on November 4, 1986. The initial mission of the practice was simple and remains so today: to provide the utmost in customer service, extensively thorough eye examinations, and a detailed explanation of your specific ocular condition and treatment options.

Since those early days, Dr. Chung and the staff of the West Hollywood Optometric Center have been very fortunate to serve over 9000 patients, many of whom are still yearly regulars. The doctor takes pride in keeping up with the latest technology as well as fashion trends, a good blend for the savvy clientele that the Center serves. He regularly attends seminars, continuing education courses, and product shows throughout the year. When the SB668 law passed in 1996 and optometrists in the state of California were authorized to prescribe oral and topical medication for ocular surface disease (conjunctivitis or “pink eye”, bacterial and viral infections, and allergies), Dr. Chung underwent the required lecture hours as well as both state and national examinations to now practice as a therapeutically licensed optometrist. Having worn glasses since age 11, and every modality of contact lenses since age 15, the doctor feels particularly comfortable in fitting contact lenses suited to your unique visual demands and lifestyle, and specializes in fitting contact lenses for patients with astigmatism, bifocals, dry eyes, and first-time anxiety. He and his staff are also committed to finding you a frame that is not only cosmetically pleasing, optically appropriate, comfortable, and affordable; they will go the extra mile to find you a look that is sexy, youthful, and hot!
