Community Involvement

Since 1984, Dr. Mark Chung has also been an active member of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. Mark comes from a musical family in Hawaii, and has been involved in piano since age 7, and dance since age 15. Discovering the chorus ultimately filled a niche in Mark and has served as a complement to his career in Optometry. Over the years, he has served on the board of directors of the chorus, as well as several other key positions. His main focus and interest has been as a choreographer for GMCLA, both for the full chorus as well as numerous small dance groups featured in their concerts, which are three times per year at the Alex Theater in Glendale.
Mark has been fortunate to have traveled quite extensively with the chorus to many domestic cities, as well as internationally to the cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Tallinn, and Berlin in 1999, Montreal in 2004, and more recently to the South American cities of Santiago, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro in 2006, helping to foster the mission of the chorus in building bridges between our community and the world. Mark has performed with the chorus in such venues as the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, Carnegie Hall in New York City, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Glinka Cappella in St. Petersburg, and our own Disney Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Although maintaining the rehearsal and traveling schedule of GMCLA is a grueling one at times, the chorus also provides a needed “family away from home” for many of its members who don’t have immediate family in Los Angeles, including Dr. Chung, and is a welcome addition to their musical lives.
